The economic structure of the enterprises in Pazardzhik municipality is fragmented, but there are leading industries in terms of the concentration of the number of companies in them. The main industries in Pazardzhik municipality by the number of participants are retail trade with 37% share, services with 18%, wholesale trade with 10%, manufacturing with 9%, and restaurants with 6%.

According to the size of the net sales revenues of enterprises, according to the National Statistical Institute, the manufacturing industry is the first with 36% of revenues, followed by trade and repair of motor vehicles with 31% of revenues, production, and distribution of electricity, heat, and gaseous fuels with 9%, construction with 6%, transport, storage and post with 5%, agriculture, forestry, and fishery with 4%, human health, and social work with 2%, etc.

From 2014 to 2019, according to National Statistical Institute data, the total number of enterprises in the non-financial sector of the municipality slightly grew, but rhythmically and without fluctuations or deviations. At the beginning of the period, 5,317 pcs. were registered, and for 2019 - 5,570 pcs., or an increase of 4.6% for 6 years, which is an annual increase of 0.8% on average. The highest share of enterprises in the sector "Trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" is 39.21%. The second largest sector is "Agriculture, forestry and fishing" with 10.57%, followed by "Manufacturing" - 8.56% and "Professional activities and scientific research" - 7.59%.
 

PRIMARY SECTOR

Agriculture

According to the data of the Regional Directorate "Agriculture" the total area of arable land in Pazardzhik municipality is 392 136 ha (34% of the total arable land in the district), the zone of used agricultural land is 417 727 ha (36% of the district's area), and the district with agricultural use is 486 915 ha (42% of the district's region). Agricultural land is concentrated along the Maritsa River, with 80% of it irrigated. The problem of local agriculture is the high share of about 8% of wastelands, limited financial resources, and unsustainable national credit policy for agriculture.

The National Statistical Institute data from 2014 to 2019 show a huge development of agriculture, forestry, and fishery on the territory of Pazardzhik municipality. Over five years, the amount of net sales revenue of the sector increased from BGN 76 142 thousand in 2014 to BGN 125 296 thousand in 2019 - 39.3%.

Given the good natural conditions of the municipality of Pazardzhik - flat terrain and excellent irrigation - crop production and the production of cereals are widespread. Among the cereals grown are maize, rice, wheat, barley, and sunflower. The municipality is particularly characteristic of being the rice-growing area of Bulgaria. In the last year, the area of rice growing was 47 945 ha. Of the oil plants, rape, and sunflower are found, while the technical ones are represented by tobacco. The municipality produces a rich variety of fruit and vegetables - peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, melons, potatoes, apples, pears, quinces, cherries, cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, raspberries, strawberries, and walnuts. Greenhouse production is well established. The area under greenhouses is 1 565 hectares, and the area under fruit crops is 13 461 hectares. Of the essential plants, oil-rose and lavender are grown, while the available medicinal and aromatic plants include hops. Forage is represented by peas and maize.

Viticulture is also widespread in 17% of the territory of Pazardzhik and doubles the national average grape yields in Pazardzhik municipality. This is an additional opportunity for the agrarian specialization of the region.

According to the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, by the end of 2020, there were 1 317 natural persons and 111 legal entities with agricultural holdings. The largest number of companies in the Pazardzhik municipality is engaged in the cultivation of cereals (excluding rice) and legumes and oilseeds, followed by the cultivation of vegetables, watermelons and melons, root crops, tubers, and pig enterprises.

Climatic conditions, the availability of pastures and meadows in the municipality, and fodder production create favorable conditions for sheep, cows, cattle, pigs, etc. However, the livestock sub-sector is developing at a fluctuating pace and on certified farms, leading to high dependence on subsidies and national additional payments.

Fishing sector

Fish farming is of great economic and social importance for the region of Pazardzhik because, in villages with an underdeveloped economy, these are alternatives for work and income, for employment and development. In the municipal territory, fishing is a tradition and continues to be practiced to provide a livelihood for many families. Local businesses are trying hard and with a lot of money to rebuild fish production, which was developed before 1990. In the last ten years, it has been established and proven that new species of fish, atypical for the region, such as sturgeon, lake crab, and African catfish, can be farmed. In parallel, carp, common carp, tench, grass carp, etc., are being farmed. Apart from being a means of livelihood along the Maritsa River, fishing is practiced as a form of leisure and tourist attraction. Many sport fishing sites have been built and are managed on the territory as a complement to fish production.
 

Secondary sector

The secondary sector includes mining and manufacturing, construction, electricity, heat, gaseous fuels production, distribution; water supply; sanitation, waste management, and remediation. In the municipality, the sector is represented by 694 manufacturing units with 10518 employees.
